2011 Award Winning Reads Challenge
This challenge was hosted by
Ashley at Books from Bleh to Basically Amazing and
Jacinda at The Reading Housewives of Indiana.
The challenge ran from Memorial Day to Labor Day (May 30th until September 5th, 2011).
I challenged myself to read nine books that fell into the categories of the Award Winners. These are the books that I read:
1. The Giver by Lois Lowry
2. Ship Breaker by Paolo Bacigalupi
3. Ramona Quimby, Age 8 by Beverly Cleary
4. The Graveyard Book by Neil Gaiman
5. Looking For Alaska by John Green
6. Fat Kid Rules The World by K.L. Going
7. Number The Stars by Lois Lowry
8. Jellicoe Road by Melina Marchetta
As you can see, I fell short by one book. I never sign up for things like this that I don’t finish, so I am pretty bummed out. I was partially through John Green’s An Abundance of Katherines. I am so, so sad that I didn’t get to finish, but I’m hoping that there will be another challenge like this in the not-too-distant future. If there is, I am definitely going to participate.
It’s really tough to pick which books have been my favorites from the ones I’ve read. It is no secret that John Green is my favorite YA author, but I have to say that Beverly Cleary is my favorite childhood author, so it was incredible to re-read Ramona Quimby, Age 8 along with my 8-year-old twin girls. Also among my favorite books of the challenge, and maybe of the year, I really loved Ship Breaker. (Paolo Bacigalupi is one of the best world-builders out there.)
Ashley & Jacinda, thank you gals so much for co-hosting this challenge. It has meant a lot to me that you guys don’t even realize. I’m really looking forward to the Just Contemporary event in November!
So bummed that you missed by just that one book! I have loved having you participate with us! Your reviews always made me all happy inside! 🙂 I'm so glad you enjoyed yourself! If ever you'd like to discuss Newbery or Printz titles, you come find me! I'm your gal! 🙂
