I’m so excited that Melissa at i swim for oceans likes discussion posts because sometimes I get chatty and have things to say. Melissa has opened her Let’s Talk event up to the rest of us and I’m excited to be a part of it. Thanks, Melissa!

According to Melissa:

Let’s Talk will feature questions or prompts, which I will answer too. Love it or hate it, weigh in or don’t, it’s my hope that Let’s Talk will at least get you thinking…and maybe even get you discussing with the rest of us!”

This week’s question
What series do you love? or,
I just can’t get enough of…

Y’all I’m not one of these
I-need-a-standalone-please” people.
While I love a standalone, I ADORE a good series.
Here are some of my favorites:
(in no particular order)

His Dark Materials Trilogy by Philip Pullman
The Golden Compass
The Subtle Knife
The Amber Spyglass
You guys, this series takes my breath away
I have never loved alternate universes
and parallel worlds so much before in my entire life.
Also, I really want a Iorek Byrnison of my own.
Can someone help me with that?
While it is wildly controversial where I live (Bible-belt, you guys)
I read it proudly and recommend it wholeheartedly.
The Iron Fey Series by Julie Kagawa
The Iron King
Winter’s Passage
The Iron Daughter
The Iron Queen
Summer’s Crossing
The Iron Knight
Okay, everybody just hold up for a second:
If you haven’t read this series, you need to right now.
I’ve never read anything like the Nevernever world
that Julie Kagawa created for these characters.
Not only that, but she made me fall in love with a freakin faery.
A FAERY.
I’m Team Ash forever and always, you guys. That is all
I cried when I read The Iron Queen. (If you’ve read it, you probably did too.)
And then I cried when I read The Iron Knight
because the series was over.
If Julie wrote twenty books in this series, I’d read them all.
And then I’d read them all AGAIN.
The Chaos Walking Trilogy by Patrick Ness
The Knife of Never Letting Go
The Ask and The Answer
Monsters of Men
I have never read a series so well-crafted and well-written as this one.
I have never had my heart so swollen with joy
and yet beaten, battered, and broken
but it felt so good and I loved every single second.
It took me forever to go through these books
because I loved them so much
A SOLID RECOMMENDATION by my good friend Lisa and
I have passed this recommend on to others who have loved the series.
I don’t care who knows that I love Todd Hewitt madly
even though he is a bit too young for me
I have his name tattooed on my heart.
He is a fighter for all things good.
(And Patrick Ness needs to be both hugged & slapped for
breaking my heart the way he does.)
The Harry Potter Series by J.K. Rowling
Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone
Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets
Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban
Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire
Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix
Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince
Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows

I’m not sure any explanation is necessary here, right?

I mean, they’re the most magical books ever.

Okay friends,
Do you have a series that
pulls at your heart?
A favorite?

Tell me, I want to know!

  1. Oof, I suppose I should read MONSTERS OF MEN finally. I was a little miffed by the way the first two books end practically in mid-sentence, and I stopped reading in protest. I don't demand that each book in a series be a standalone, but I do think each book should end in a mildly restful place.

And WHAT GIVES, Asheley? Where is the QUEEN'S THIEF love?!

    • I know, I know. I had never even heard of Queen's Thief until you and Adam started talking about it. Once I found out The Thief was a Newbery Honor, it jumped up onto my TBR. I'll read it soon, I promise. It sounds like something I would like.

And I can't sing the praises of Patrick Ness enough, even though he breaks my heart too. I encourage you to read Monsters of Men, but it might hurt a little.

  2. YES IRON FEY!!!!! I remember first reading The Iron King and I was all "I'm not sure what all the hype is about" and then I got about halfway through and started falling in love with Ash and went "oh". Then the next 3 books just blew me away. LOVE THEM!

  3. It is actually one of my bookish goals this year to read The Iron Fey Series. I am very glad to see that you think it is worth my time:) I have the first in the series, and as soon as I get caught up I plan on reading it.

  4. LOVE the Iron Fey series, The Iron Queen was a MASTERPIECE in my opinion, talk about an awesome heroine on an awesome quest! I have not read the His Dark Materials series, maybe I should? Not so familiar with them other than the first was made into a movie. And The Chaos Walking Series. I loved the first book, but man, after what happened to the dog and the poor, unsuspecting, spackle, I don't know if I can continue on with the rest of the books. Should I? Is it worth it? It was a TOUGH read for me, I was kind of a emotionally spent after I finished it.

  5. The Iron Queen was my favorite of the Iron Fey series too. But I could eat those books, I love them so much.

His Dark Materials is just, WOW. They're amazing. I haven't seen the movie based on the first book because I heard it wasn't really that good, but the books are incredible.

Oh my word Chaos Walking. Yes, the first book is emotional. So is the rest of the series. It really took me a long time to get through it because I would read only a few pages at a time because it was just so much emotion to process…I HAD to have somebody to talk to about everything I was reading. BUT…I'm so glad I read it and stuck with it because Patrick Ness is a master. He can write in a way that is different than anyone else. I think it would be worth it, but you should plan on some emotion for sure.

  6. Jac

I really need to read the Iron Fey; I feel like the last person in the bookish community who hasn't read it.

I don't know that I have a favorite series; I love so many of them. I really think it's whatever I'm in the middle of reading at the time *lol*

  7. I'm glad to see another series lover!! While I enjoy a good standalone, I really adore series'! I love being able to follow the same character(s) whether they're growing up or it's just different stories without a growing up aspect.
I've only read HP out of this list, but I do plan on reading The Chaos Walking trilogy eventually.
If we're talking about my faves can I just say The Search for FREAKING WondLa! (Okay, freaking isn't part of the title and I've actually only read book 1, but I adored it).
Percy Jackson/Heroes of Olympus is another of my serious faves. The Uglies series is fantastic. I really the The Ghost and the Goth series, but I don't think it gets very much attention. The Gone series by Michael Grant, The Forest of Hands and Teeth series, The Maze Runner series, The Looking Glass Wars…oh, I'm sorry, am i rambling? I told you I loved series' (I hate trying to figure out what the plural of this word is) 😛

    • Oh yes, I know you loved WondLa, and I plan on reading it – hopefully soon. Percy Jackson is a favorite around this house too. And Scott Westerfeld is the reason I started reading YA – I ate that series up. Loved it. The Gone and Maze Runner series are both on my list for *soon* too.

  8. Hi Asheley *waves*

It's been a while since I stopped by! So sorry – life just got so busy these days (living with in-laws and all). I am so happy to see The Chaos Walking trilogy on your list <3 <3 <3 And I SO NEED TO FINALLY READ Iron Fey series! (someone kicked me in the butt, please, will ya?).

I do love series, too, I love getting attached to the characters! After awhile they feel more like your friends, someone you feel comfortable around – you laugh and cry with them, and it's all so wonderful!

    <3 Lova ya, hun!

    • HELLO EVIE!!!

You KNOW Chaos Walking will be on my list of favorite series! Patrick Ness fangirl FOREVER. <3 <3

Oh Evie you would LOVE Iron Fey series. YOU WOULD. And then I would get to read your brilliant review. It would be awesome.

I LOVE LOVE LOVE it when you stop by!!

  9. The Iron Queen and The Iron Knight made me cry too, the books are sooooo good! I'm really excited that Kagawa is doing the spin-off with Ethan and cannot wait for The Lost Prince!

The ones I am reading right now are –
Sugar Maple Series, by Barbara Bretton (EXCELLENT!!!!!)I'll be reading the 4th in May.
The Hex Hall Series – again I'll be reading the 3rd in May
