The third thing you need to know is this:
AAAHHH the book is over, but I want more!
This is a bit selfish, actually. I remember reading Grave Mercy – I closed the book and had this feeling of just having finished something amazing and then at the same time, I knew that whatever I picked up next had some mighty big shoes to fill. The same feeling happened again this time and I loved it. Both books had great plots and ended well, but I wasn’t satisfied when the reading was over. It was like having the perfect dessert, but the portion was a little too small – I just wanted one more bite.
This is not really a bad thing. It just means that I didn’t want to give up my time with the characters.

Dark Triumph by Robin LaFevers – I mean, good gracious! What on earth do you say when you finally get to read a highly-anticipated book that surpasses your expectations? This is one of those cases when I wish that I could talk to each of you in person about this book so you can see my face, see my grand hand gestures, and hear how excited my voice is. I devoured this book.
I love it when I’m a little bit reluctant to love a main character and then I end up falling for him/her anyway – that’s what happened here. My reluctance was only because I’m so attached to Ismae, but I really shouldn’t have felt reluctant to love Sybella. She completely stands on her own in this story, and she is fierce and butt-kicking just like Ismae. In fact, one of the things that Beast eventually loves about her is her ferocity, her ability to hold her own and be a strong woman. There are several times in the story that Sybella’s strength and independence is written into the plot. There is so much to her character, from her horrid past to her complicated present, she is written fully and completely.
I was just as nervous about Beast as I was about Sybella – but I ended up loving him a ton. I don’t think that he can take Duval’s place in my heart and mind (and neither can Sybella take Ismae’s place), but this guy is something special. He’s well-known throughout the land for his less-than-pleasant looks, his size, and his skills as a fighter. He’s quiet, though, and that is what I liked about him the most. Beast is not as loud as his name suggests, and he falls in love with Sybella in a quiet and respectful way. He respects her as a woman, a person, a fighter and he is also able to look beyond her reputation (which is not too great) and see her as a person of worth. Their relationship is one that is built slowly as both of them have pains from their past and present to overcome. Their romance is just as lovely as the overall story is awesome.
Dark Triumph has a particularly nasty villain and a really excellent secondary cast. Overall, the characterization in this book stands out to me. While there are some characters that overlap this book and the previous book, many of the characters are new (and awesome). In particular, there is a certain prison guard that I just loved.
Interestingly, there is another character – one of Sybella’s brothers, Julian – that really stuck with me. His part of the story is one that kind of nagged at me a bit while I was reading. What I mean is that he was present as a character, but I felt like I was sort of swatting him away like a fly or an annoying pest – he has some behaviors that are…odd. I wrinkled my nose up at him several times. But by the end of the book, it was Julian that had me in tears and his part will be one of the parts of this trilogy that I remember after it is completed.
Dark Triumph is fantastic. Sybella and Beast came pretty close to Ismae and Duval in terms of being butt-kicking and swoonworthy and likable. This story is just as good as Grave Mercy – some will probably say it is better, I think. At the end of this book, I was sad that it was over. To me, that’s one of the signs of a great story – one that you miss as soon as you close the last page. I am already anticipating Mortal Heart, which will be Annith’s story, scheduled for release around this time next year.

Are you excited for DARK TRIUMPH?
Did you love GRAVE MERCY as much as I did?
I love that you put "nun assassins" under your list of who the book will appeal to. Who DOESN'T love killer nuns? Anyway, I am so very excited for this story. I liked Grave Mercy, but I didn't' fall in love. But I'm hoping to do so with this one, kind of like I did with Scarlet after Cinder. I actually have started to prefer companion books, because then the author doesn't have to add drama just to keep things interesting for the MC. I also adore Historical Fiction. I'm hoping to meet this author next week, so I need to try and get my hands on this book soon! Great review.
Nun assassins for the win! I just fell in love with Grave Mercy, but like I've said already I think it had much to do with it being my very first venture into this genre. I'm seeing some exciting things about the reaction people are giving this book – liking it more, etc – but I think my heart lies with Ismae and Grave Mercy. But this one is a VERY CLOSE second.
I like companion books too – I was thinking of all of the series that I'm reading that are involving companions instead of sequels, and I get excited but more than that I get NERVOUS. But you know that my reading habits are just weird anyway. I get really attached to the characters in the first book and I'm afraid I won't see them again – it happened with Cinder and Scarlet, but Cinder played a large role in Scarlet. It's a quirk!
That's cool that you're meeting this author next week. I look forward to hearing abotu that one if you do get to meet her!
What I liked about Scarlet is that we still got the previous voices, but everything got more complex to include more people. I've started to gravitate towards books like that, because there is less of the middle book syndrome in that case. I'm very interested in you reading The Queen's Thief series because the voices change a lot in that, though you mainly follow one character.
I wasn't a fan of Grave Mercy at all, but I am REALLY curious to read this one and it sounds like it's right up my alley. I think I'm going to give this author another try for sure. Lovely review, Asheley!(:
So exciting that you're gonna give this series another try, Keertana! I hope you love it this time around! It's a great companion. 🙂
I think I loved Dark Triumph just a bit more than Grave Mercy, though I am a big fan of both Duval and Ismae. But I remember loving the mysterious Sybella in GM, wanting to know MORE about her, and just adoring Beast, who had such a great voice. As usual my love for the secondaries took over. Imagine my delight when those two get their own book, HOORAY!
That said, I really liked that Ismae and Duval returned in this book too. It was good to see them and know that things are going well:)
I loved the romance in this book. And I love what you said about Beast being so respectful of Sybella. I love that he was the only man not to objectify her. Their slow burn relationship made my heart all kinds of happy:)
Yes to the uber villain de Albret! Ugh! He is SUCH a piece of work! And YES to Julian! He was a mess but I totally felt sympathetic towards him at the same time. In the end, he was another victim of his past:(
I love this review! Sorry it took me a while to comment, I had to finish my own first:) Great job, A! I am already excited for Mortal Heart and Annith's story!
I actually thought about you while I was reading this book with several of the secondaries. The jailor and Julian, in particular! Great characters.
The slow burn was really great. I don't think their romance was a tense as the romance between Ismae and Duval, but I liked it just as much. The way he accepted her despite everything. So lovely.
AAH Julian. Man, my heart feels so many different things for him.
I'm always SO nervous about companion books and sequels too. They could be so fantastic, but they could also be SO wrong. It's hard to know what you're in for!
I'm so happy that this one was so amazing. Beast is one of the most amazing characters I've ever read!
YES! I'm glad you understand what I'm talking about with companion books!
And I agree – Beast is a fantastic character. One of the best from this series.
Ooh, I actually like Sybella and Beast EVEN MORE in terms of buttkicking and swoonworthiness. They're just so adorable, and unique as a couple. Dark Triumph was even better overall for me. Love LaFevers' work so much!
I love the way that so many are such big fans of Sybella and Beast and yet there are still some that are big fans of Ismae and Duval. I suspect that some will be big fans of Annith when her story comes out next year. I am just astounded at how wonderful these books are and how talented LaFevers is at making them come together so well. Love them!
Ahhhh! I need to read this one still. SO bad. And I am so excited for Sybella and Beast. The wee bit that we saw of them in the first made me love them. I can't wait to fall in love with them more.
Ash, I predict that you'll end up liking this one maybe more than Grave Mercy. Sybella's story is so great and Beast is an AMAZING character. Plus the secondary characters in this book are (probably) even better in my opinion because they are so memorable. It's almost like LaFevers is finding her groove even more (if that's possible) and I suspect that the next book will be even more stellar.
I loved DT more than GM because I just adored Beast-he is such an honorable fierce guy and the fact that he adores Sybella in all her brokenness and pain and strength makes me weak in the knees. Amazing review!
I pre-orderd this book and STILL haven't read it yet. MAJOR FAIL ON MY PART. But seriously, I better read it this summer. Or else.
