Ten Bookish Goals For 2013
Before I do this, you should know that I’m opposed to setting goals for myself.
I never keep them.

1. Read 150 books.
This should be no problem for me.
I set this same goal for myself in 2012
and completed the year with 160.
However, I didn’t accurately count all of my books
so I feel like my number would’ve been a little higher.
(See, I don’t keep goals well.)
Perhaps I’ll be more accurate this year.

2. Get over my weird issue with reading
the final books in series
.
It’s weird, I know. But it’s one of my quirks.
I can’t stand to put characters I love away.
I’ve been better about it in 2012 but
I want to get over it completely in 2013 and actually finish series.

3 & 4. Move on to the second books in the chunky series I love.
I love some first books so much that I don’t want to move forward
to the next books in the series.
I’m looking at you The Name of the Wind and Daughter of the Forest!
I really need to get moving on those series.

(And I don’t think I should allow myself to re-read those before I move on, either,
or I’d NEVER move on to the next books!)

5. Never, ever stop audiobooking.
In my house, in my car,
while I’m cooking or cleaning.
Most often, while I’m following along in print –
this gal is happiest when someone is reading a book to her –
and waaayyy most often it is a re-read.
Audible and Overdrive are my BFF’s.

6. Continue to visit frequent my library
I was raised visiting my library
and I’m a card-holder in two different counties.
I will never stop using this precious resource,
even though I have books on my shelves that I haven’t read.

I AM NOT AT ALL BOTHERED BY THIS.
*As a taxpayer, it is my right and and privilege.*
Let’s keep libraries open, you guys.
USE THEM. Also, get your kids library cards.
(My kids got library cards for their birthdays.
We’re nerds like that)

7. Read from my shelves
You know, when the mood strikes me.
I have no problems buying books that I haven’t planned to read
right away. They’re there, waiting for me whenever I’m ready.
Let it be known, however, that I very rarely pay full price for books
because I VERY MUCH ENJOY used book shopping and finding
a new home for books that other people don’t want anymore.
I’ve found some that I LOVE at Goodwill and other used stores.

8. There are some series that I’ve waited to begin when they’re completed
2013 is the year. I’m so excited
.
I’ve heard great things about the Delirium books by Lauren Oliver.
I also have several series that I’m having a royal fit to start:
the Unearthly series, the Lumatere Chronicles, and about a bazillion others.
I like the fact that they’re finished and I can move at my own pace instead of
the brutal wait between installments.

9. Keep reading recommendations from my friends.
Some of the best books I’ve ever read have been on recommendation by
trusted reading/blogger friends.
Listening to other people that know my reading habits tends to prove fruitful.
I plan on continuing that.

10. I am not concerned with lots of thingsI want to stay that way.
I am not concerned with buying books on impulse, because I don’t do that.

I think hard about every book purchase before I make it. I DO buy books
that I don’t plan on reading for a long time, particularly if they’re on sale or used.
I don’t care about page counts.
I am not concerned this year with challenges.

(I signed up for two and am removing my names.)
I only want to read and re-read the books I want to read
and talk about them with other people as much as possible.
That is all.

BONUS. 11. Re-Read and Re-Read some more
I simply cannot get enough of the books I love.
I want to read them a thousand times.
Maybe by print, but if the audio is good,
I want to hear someone else read them to me the next time.

**************************************************

What are your goals??

I feel like stating any goals
is my way of ensuring that I won’t keep them.
I hope this isn’t true!

    • I love series so much. I know there is probably no way I'll finish all that I have going on – but there are a few that I want to start now that I know they're completed because of cliffhangers. I'm so excited for that!

  1. I am so glad there is someone else out there who rereads by audio. I ABSOLUTELY LOVE hearing my favourite books read to me – Beautiful Creatures is top of my list, but a real oldie – A Town Called Alice – is a close second. Yeah for overdrive!

    • YES YES YES!! It is one of my favorite things to do PERIOD. I love a story that I have already read and loved being read back to me so I can experience it again – my husband wonders why on earth I waste my time, but with audio format I can re-read while I'm cooking or cleaning or doing other things. I *do* like to follow along with the book or Kindle, though, by having it sit on the counter and flipping the pages as I go along. When I'm lucky, I can actually *sit down* and flip the pages while listening. But yes, I LOVE doing this. So glad you do too, because you understand how wonderful it is!

  2. HI I love your goals! They're actually very on par with my reading life. I don't really set goals either (though I did this year, haha) and I'm VERY chill about reading, so I totally get where you're coming from.

  3. We're totally reading goal twins since my goal is 150 books as well! Yay!

And, as I mentioned on Twitter, we're probably going to be reading a lot of the same series (and possibly re-reading some of the same books). I sense fun discussions in our future! πŸ˜‰

  4. You and I share a phobia of making too many goals for ourselves, but these are all great! I want to do more re-reads this year as well, you're so much better at them than I am. And audiobooks! I want to START The Name of The Wind series, and I'll be right there with you in Lumatere! If you need someone to hold your hand as you finish some series, I'll be there ;).

    • OH I LOVE THIS. The Name of the Wind!! I'm excited for Lumatere, although as you know I've started the Unearthly series first because of Pitch Dark. I think you'll be okay with this. πŸ™‚

      AUDIOBOOKS YAY YAY YAY FOREVER!!!!
AND RE-READS I COULD LEAP THROUGH MY HOUSE!!! But I'm sitting down and that would require getting up. But just imagine it in your head. Do it.

  5. Yay! Great goals and all of them very much "Asheley" in nature (you know what I mean:) Love that you are going to get to tackle some big series that are wrapping up. I think you are going to LOVE Delirium and don't EVEN get me started on the Lumatere Chronicles again! And HOORAY for moving on to second books in a series you love too! That's a big step for you, go for it!

I think the BEST one on your list is also (unofficially) on mine: READ FROM YOUR SHELVES. That is a fantastic goal and I am totally going to try that one too! Very, very good goals!

    • EEK! Big steps!! (That reminds me of What About Bob, the movie. I'm such a What About Bob/Baby Step reader!) I'm SO EXCITED for Lumatere, but I'm doing the Unearthly series first. I mentioned it on Twitter last night and the world exploded. So I'm pretty excited about it.

Yeah, that read from my shelves thing – that's so hard. I love my library so much. That'll be my HARDEST goal for the year, mark my words.

  6. Goodreads didn't count all the books I read last year so although I beat my goal too I know I read more than what the final count was.

"I am not concerned with lots of things" I'm with you on that!

    • I'm such a laid-back reader. I'm really not overly concerned with all of the goals and things. We'll see how I do with this. I just pick up whatever strikes me at the time! But I love to read and re-read and audio-read and I'm gonna keep on doing it!

And I WANT to be better about keeping up with my Goodreads this year so it'll be more accurate. Hopefully I can…

  7. Yay for library support! I get the majority of the books I read from my library and I love supporting it. I adore re-reading but haven't done any in a while. Hopefully I can muster the effort to do so. I love your resolution list and how you're not allowing your goals to be defined by certain book blogger expectations. I hope you accomplish all these goals, and then some!

    • Thanks Amanda! I'm such a fly-by-the-seat-of-my-pants reader that if I set expectations for myself, I let myself down. So even though I made out this list, I'm very chill with it and won't be all upset if I don't get to do everything on it.

And YES. LIBRARIES FOREVER. Let's keep them open and support them and get all kids library cards. Adults too. Good grief, they're so awesome. Why doesn't everyone use them? I don't get it!

    • Oh yes! This is SO BIG for me. I get FROZEN and can't make myself pick up the next book because I just want to hold the end of the book in time because I liked it so much. It's WAY MORE than just those two series too, I just didn't list them all. I *really* want to work on that in 2013. I want to at least read a little further in some of these series, but if I don't, the books will still be there! I love the stories too much to rush thru them!

    • I love audiobooks for so many reasons, but I think that one of them is that I'm *more* productive when I'm listening. It's like I drown out everything else, focus on the story, and clean clean clean. Or whatever other task I'm working on. I love them so much. I plan to listen to more audios in 2013. Last year I listened to a bunch of them but I didn't blog about them. This year, I will.

  8. I really only have two bookish goals (right now at least):

    1. To be better about updating my Goodreads reveiws.
    2. To actually review all the books I said I'd review in 2012…yes, I am THAT behind.

  9. 1. I debated making my goal 150 books since I came really close to that last year, but then decided I wanted to stick with 100. I think I get too stressed if I set a really high goal + start avoiding reading longer books because I think about how it will get me off track, put me behind, etc. But I'll be interested to see if I come close to 150 again this year despite my lower goal πŸ™‚

    2. Haha! I love that you don't want to read the final book in a series. You're already doing good because you read the ENTIRE Unearthly series practically straight through. I'm pretty sure that's not normal for you, so look at you already working around that reading issue. Plus, there are a number of series finishing this year – plenty of opportunities to meet this goal!

3 & 4. Oh chunky series. Blogging has been great for me in so many ways, but I also think it's been bad for me in this one. I think I'm so much more aware of what I'm reading, my pace reading it and what else is sitting there waiting for me to read so I've not been as good about picking up chunky series. Sometimes I KNOW that I'll probably devour them, but I still just let them sit there… languishing and giving me sad eyes for not loving them enough to actually pick them up for long than two seconds.

    5. My goal is to audiobook more. I really got into more in the second half of last year, so I think I'm still learning the art of audiobooking. I still can't listen while I'm doing too many things because I can't quite concentrate the way I should. I've been listening to and from work most days, and that's really helping me develop my audio listening skills. The only downside is that it takes much longer to finish an audiobook when I listen to it that way.

    6. I LOVE THE LIBRARY SO MUCH! And am also a card-holder in two counties because the library system in my county is mostly sad.sad.sad but I still have a card for those times when it looks like they might have something good. They other library system is like AMAZEBALLS in so many ways and has a fabulous selection so I'm really happy to sometimes ignore books on my own shelves in order to support theirs πŸ™‚ And OMG love the library cards for your kids' birthdays. Adorable!

    7. Don't even get me started on this one. Except I'm not as good about never paying full price so I need to stop ignoring my shelves that beg for me to come and shop from them instead.

    8. OMG I think I could draw a heart around this bullet point. Delirium series together. Unearthly series together. Lumatere series together. WE WIN 2013.

    9. Yay for reading recommendations! I love reading stuff people recommend for me UNTIL you get that one book you really don't like and you have to find a way to hem and haw around your true feelings for it because nobody likes the feeling of recommending a book to someone and then having them not enjoy it. I hate when that happens! I once read an entire series that I really disliked because I worked with someone who loaned me all the books and I didn't have the heart to give them back without finishing them + kept thinking they might get better.

    10. AMEN TO THIS. I'm trying to avoid a blogging burnout like I had last year, and I definitely think this is key to that πŸ™‚

    11. RE-READING = LOVE.
