Time To Talk: Finishing Series in 2013!

My picture! My coffee mug!

This post is inspired by a blog post created by Heidi @ Bunbury in the Stacks
in which she discusses some of her
most anticipated series finales for this upcoming year.

Heidi mentions that long periods of time before a series is finished can often lead
her to lose interest or perhaps abandon the series. I understand this!
She lists some of her most anticipated series for this year in her post

I too share some of Heidi’s love for saving up a series until it is finished,
although my reasons are a little different.

I’ve talked a little bit before about how absolutely TERRIFIED
BUT that doesn’t mean that there aren’t several series
wrapping up this year that I have my eyes on for several different reasons.

Perhaps I’ve been WAITING FOREVER for the series to end
because I’ve heard big things about BIG CLIFFHANGERS
and I’m not a big fan of those types of endings:

I’m reading this series now – currently almost halfway
thru Pandemonium and feeling UNDERWHELMED.
Encourage me, friends! HELP.
I’ve waited forever for this! I don’t want to be disappointed.

I read the first book but then stopped with plans to
restart the series when it was completed.
It’s time! YAY!
I CANNOT WAIT TO DIVE BACK INTO THIS WORLD.

I’m not sure what to think of this series.
Everyone seems to have an opinion, and they’re all different.
I’m gonna give it a go, though. But not until the fall
AFTER it’s all published.

*************************************************

Perhaps I’m just curious about a series that lots of my reading friends
seem to love – with beautiful covers, a Southern author, and (I think)
a Southern setting.

This has all of the ingredients of something that I might like
so SURE I’ll give it a try. Sure!

*************************************************

Perhaps I’ve already read the earlier book(s)
and I just want MORE MORE MORE of what I already love:

UM, YES PLEASE!
I believe I’ll have more of that. Right away!

YESSSS Yes Yes Yes Yes Yes. YES!
This series is incredible. Beth Revis is super nice.
AND Hooray for North Carolina authors!
I should have read this finale already, but the truth is:
I’M HOLDING OUT, SAVING IT FOR THAT PERFECT TIME

*************************************************

Perhaps I have already read you this year, completed series!

OH CHEMICAL GARDEN TRILOGY, I LOVE YOU SO!
It was hard finally picking up the series finale and
finally saying goodbye to this series BUT
in a way, saying goodbye was sort of like
saying hello to a bazillion re-read opportunities
BECAUSE Y’ALL KNOW I WILL RE-READ THIS.
I love these books so much.
WOW, UNEARTHLY SERIES…
You were certainly very…discussable.
I totally appreciate that. And…I’m still discussing you. And stuff.
*************************************************

This group of series is certainly not ALL of the great ones coming out in 2013.
I notice more and more almost every day.
2014 promises even MORE great series coming to an end.

Are there any series coming to an end in 2013
that you would recommend to me?

Which ones did I NOT put up here?

  1. SO not going to lie – I am the opposite of everyone ever. I LOVE the delay in between books in series. Yes, I totally forget everything that happens, but I am a big fan of anticipation. I love anticipating the next book in the series and waiting for a whole year to pass and then the cover reveal and excerpts and all the build up to release day and finally getting the book in my hands. Yes, the instant gratification is nice, especially when there's a major cliffhanger, but I just…I don't know, I love the anticipation, hah!

ANYWAY. So yes. I really need to go get a copy of Sever and finish the series because WHAT THE WHAT. And I absolutely cannot wait until I have the Retribution of Mara Dyer in my hands. Please, oh please, start this series ASAP!

    • Sometimes I feel like I like the build-up and the wait and all of that because it's a lot of fun but sometimes I'm late to the party on a series and sometimes the cliffhangers make me HURT (Cassie Clare!).

BOOM POW Sever. Yes. Heavens that series!! That last book is one of the best finales I've ever read. Actually, it's also probably one of the only finales I've ever read because I'm so scared of them. But seriously, SO GOOD. AAAHHH.

I'm afraid of Mara Dyer! EEEKKKK. But man oh man, I love those covers and they're so pretty on my shelves! I've heard they're creepy?

  2. You have some really great series in that list. Some series I like to wait for, and others I read as they come. I never did find the draw in the Chemical Garden series though. The first one was so ho hum for me I never bothered with the rest – in fact I'm giving away arcs of the first two in our Spring Cleaning Hop entry over at The Paperback Princesses if anyone would like to try for them?
Sorry to rain on one of your favourite series Asheley

    • You know, I think with the Chemical Garden series – people have either really loved them or they didn't really connect at all, and I can absolutely see that. They're so unique and not everyone's cup of tea, ya know?

  3. I felt more meh about Pandemonium when compared to Delirium too, Ash. It's not just you. And the reviews of Requiem have been mixed so I'm a little anxious…

I think you will really like the Hourglass series. Myra McEntire writes really funny dialogue and it's has a very southern feel to it. And yes, it takes place in a fictional Tennessee town:) Plus: KALEB BALLARD. Swoon….

I only read Across the Universe and I liked it ok, but I am wondering if I should continue the series. I love sci fi, but I didn't really connect with the two MCs. I felt more for Elder than the girl, can't even recall her name now. But I did love that drawing of the ship in the front! That was awesome:)

I cannot wait to get my hands on a copy of CP2. I'm so nervous about that book because I am definitely Team Jem:)

And you know that I'm down with Fever and Sever as soon as I can get to them!

    • The further I get into Pandemonium, the more I like it with the exception of one detail. And I'm actually wondering if I *may* like Requiem since everyone and their brother seems to be really disappointed in it. I'm almost looking forward to reading it and seeing how I feel/getting the series over with.

I'm excited about the Hourglass series!
The Across the Universe series is SO MUCH FUN. It's wonderful sci-fi and I'm just a huge fan of Beth Revis the person as well as Beth Revis' books. Across the Universe was a book that I loved the STORY more than I loved the characters, and honestly the second book was probably better than the first! I'd say give the series another go. (And I need to get to that finale but I'm scared!)

I CAN'T WAIT TO GO THROUGH THE INFERNAL DEVICES. I'M SO EXCITED. FLAILY ARMS AND HANDS EXCITED. Even if there are cliffhangers and painful things, I don't care. So excited.

And take your time on Chemical Garden – the series is completed and ready for you whenever you feel ready for it! You know I'm ready to discuss!!!

  4. I always say that I hate series, but you know I am such a liar. While I love standalones, I can't pretend that I don't get excited about the next book in a series, etc.

Ahhh! I finished Unearthly this year too — perfect ending yo.
I think that with the Delirium series, if you don't totally love Pandemonium, you probably won't be keen on Requiem.
Ahhh, I need to finish Wither.
You'll like Hourglass, the main character is very snarky and fun. Plus the time stuff is cool.
I still need to read Across The Universe.

OMG I still have not read beyond Clockwork Princess either.
UGH cannot wait for the next Masque book.

I am so far behind on blogs, so I am not sure if you've read it yet but The Girl Of Fire And Thorns series is coming to an end and those are totally Asheley books without a doubt in my mind.

    • I don't really know what to say about the Delirium series just yet! My thoughts are so up and down! It's SO FRUSTRATING. I'm gonna read the whole thing, though, because I've waited forever and a day for it.

"You'll like Hourglass…" YES! That's what I want to hear coming from you!

Across the Universe and Wither are among my faves!!
*If the next Bethany Griffin book doesn't come out soon I may go crazy. Seriously.*

You're actually I think the second or third person to tell me in the past WEEK about the Rae Carson books! I REALLY need to get my butt in gear on those. "totally Asheley books" – LOVE THAT.

  5. Amy

I love reading series books, but I have none of your or Heidi's superhuman patience to wait for all the books to come out. If a new series interests me, I want to start it right away, and then pine and die for each new book to come out. So HOORAY YOU GUYS for being able to wait!!
I have the Unearthly series on my nightstand right now. I've only read book 1, but I loved it so I'm going to get on that as well.
I'm sorry that Pandemonium is underwhelming you. I WISH SO HARD that I could say that Requiem will erase all of your meh feelings, but it didn't for me. I hope it does for you!
I wasn't a super fan of Wither, so I haven't read the other books in that series yet. I know you'll be biased because you love them, but should I pick up Fever? I barely remember what happened in Wither, lol!
Hourglass has been on my radar for ever…I think we'd both love it! I haven't read Across the Universe or Masque of the Red Death yet, but I have copies of both, so NO EXCUSES.
My copy of Clockwork Princess has arrived! But I've listened to the first two on audio, so I think I'm going to try to do that for this last book as well.
Have you read any of the Gallagher Girls series? That finishes this year, too, and I'm looking forward to it. Spies are fun! And I second April's rec of The Girl of Fire and Thorns. That's GOOD STUFF, Asheley.

    • Amy, I won't lie – sometimes it is has been SO HARD to be patient – like with Delirium and Pandemonium. But I KNEW that the cliffhangers would just BREAK ME. And I feel like Einstein for waiting on Delirium and I hear that Pandemonium's ending is worse. I'm almost there and I think I know what it is – which totally supports my theory that I'm EINSTEIN for waiting for this series to be completed. I'm liking it more now, but I still am up and down on it! EEK.

About Fever, it's darker than Wither, so it all depends on what part of Wither didn't really do it for you? I LOVE that type of bleak, dystopian/apocalyptic world. I loved DeStefano's ability to make something ugly sound beautiful with her words. And I loved the story of Rhine and Gabriel and Linden and even those crazy sister wives. But Fever is painful. But then Sever is the PERFECT ending to that series. It was WONDERFUL. I feel like that series is like a gift from Lauren DeStefano to ME, which sounds crazy, but it's true.

Oh gosh I loved Masque SO MUCH. I'm crazy with want for that next book like right NOW. NOW! And they've pushed back the release date WHAT WHAT WHAT??!! 🙂

Across the Universe is a fun sci-fi and the second book is even better. I'm SCARED of the third book becuase you know that I FEAR the finales, but I need to pick it up because I TRUST Beth Revis completely and I know she won't do me wrong.

Can't wait for Hourglass. THOSE COVERS, GAH. Also, that Unearthly series is good but GAH it's. so. emotional.

I CAN'T WAIT TO BLOW THRU INFERNAL DEVICES. I want to audiobook them too, but I don't know if I can wait for the library to get the audiobooks back in. I actually HAVE the first two books on the shelves and will probably library the third book (until after BEA at least, $$$) so IDK if I want to wait until my turn for the library audiobook copies!

I don't know about the Gallagher Girls?!

Fire and Thorns is on my list for this year! You're among many to have mentioned those to me in the past few days! And I'm SO GLAD. They do seem like books I'd love.

    • You're totally welcome! Sometimes it's so great to be able to just go straight thru a series and not have to worry about a wait! Unless you're like me and sometimes get totally stressed out by the wait and have NO CHOICE but to do them all at once. I'm such a weird reader.

But seriously, some of these are my favorites!

  6. You're so awesome for checking with me (and giving me a nod), but of COURSE I'm happy to see this post! As I said, I'm picking up Hallowed at the library tomorrow, and will probably finally get to it in the next few weeks. Kind of nervous. Also reminds me I still need to read Reached by Ally Condie…

I'm interested in Beth Revis' series. I really didn't think it was for me, but I keep hearing such lovely things about it and her that I might give it a go regardless.

I also have a couple of series where I've read the first book, but plan on holding off for the rest. Namely The False Prince, Daughter of Smoke and Bone, Fury, etc.

Enjoy your binge reading friend, I know I will!

    • Yeah, I understand about being nervous about the Unearthly series! I blew thru that one and it was really emotional but in the end, I did okay. Boundless was my favorite of the three! (I think that I'm in the minority in my feelings on that one, but I stand by it for reasons that I'll wait and share after you're done!)

I haven't finished the Ally Condie series either!

I love Beth Revis – I love NC authors and she is wonderfully talented and smart. I enjoyed Across the Universe and I enjoyed A Million Suns even more. I'm nervous about the final book, though, because I don't want the series to end and there are some crazy things that COULD happen and I just get really nervous! If you like sci-fi, you might like it. 🙂

I haven't started The False Prince yet or Fury! But I did read Days of Blood and Starlight and LOVED it. LOVED. Loved x 1000000.

  7. I always get terrified when it comes to finishing series that I love. I remember holding off on reading the final book in a series (Inheritance by Christopher Paolini, in case you wanted to know) for a WHOLE YEAR just because I couldn't bear to see it end and I worried I would hate it (of course, I LOVED it!).

I also hold off when I feel like EVERYONE is busy talking about the series. It kind of sways my opinion one way or another, which I don't really like. So I try to wait until I feel like I can be objective about it!

    • I'm the SAME WAY about holding off when everyone talks about a series – like the hype machine I talk about all the time. It definitely sways my opinion, and most often I feel like it gets my hopes up only for me to be let down later. That bothers me because I want so much to be invested in the series and to like it, whatever it may be. I think waiting to be objective is something more people could benefit from, but it does take patience sometimes.

  8. I'm so proud of you for getting through several of these already, and for all the ones you still plan to read! I am personally most eager to start and finish The Chemical Garden series this year, but I can't wait for the Mara Dyer series to end. I hope you love The Infernal Devices!!
