Time To Talk! How LOYAL are you? Cause I may be a bit crazy with it.

LOYAL-CRAZY, PART 1: Print/Ebooks

We all have those authors we’re ridiculously loyal to, right?
I KNOW IT ISN’T JUST ME.

For some of us, we will read/buy the book purely because it was written by someone we love.

Maybe we don’t even need to read the summary, because we just KNOW we love the author so much and that’s all we need to know.

Maybe we’ve loved a series so much so far that we’ll pre-order without even reading the summary or the rest of the series.

Or we KNOW we’ll love the spin-off series because we love both the author and the first series with all of our hearts. (Looking at all of you Vampire Academy people! I still haven’t read. For shame.)

Maybe an author has a writing style that just grabs you and pulls you in, so that author is instant-read or instant-buy for you. We love those beautiful words and phrases, don’t we? YES.

Maybe you’re so emotionally connected to the stories this author tells, you just know you’ll be connected to the stories that come next, be they a separate series or the next standalone.

My point is,
SURELY I’m not the only one that is a little crazy with the
YEAH ____ IS INSTANT-READ FOR ME BECAUSE ______.

Because, y’all I have to tell you
it seems that the writing is getting better
the stories are more compelling

and I’m becoming way more involved

This leads to more instant-read for me.
Perhaps it’s because I’m discussing books more with friends.
Perhaps it’s because the content is actually better.

For whatever reason, I’m loyal to a fault sometimes.
And by fault, I mean my wallet hates me/my library loves me.

SIDENOTE: I am WAY WAY more instant-buy-loyal to the indie/non-traditionally published authors than I am traditionally published. There are reasons, but the main one is accessibility to me! It’s all about the dollars, folks. I’m not EVEN putting pictures up in this particular post because I’m loyal to far too many. But I’m GREAT for recommendations.

LOYAL-CRAZY, PART 2: Audiobooks

Just a few days ago I received a tweet from Andrew Bates, the voice of the SYLO audiobook. (SYLO is written by D.J. MacHale and was recently published by Razorbill. You can find my review here, including audiobook notes.) He was kind enough to tweet me about my words about the audiobook notes in my review in which I called his work “completely fantastic” and totally meant it.

Okay, see, you guys know me and you know that when I find something that I like – I will geek out over it. Sometimes the geeking out spills over into my reviews in a professional-like way.

It is narrated by Andrew Bates, who is new-to-me as far as voice actors go with audiobooks and was completely fantastic. I loved the way he voiced each character in this audiobook, particularly the members of SYLO – the military branch – because he made them sound like the military officers would. I did chuckle a few times at the way the young female characters sounded, but I think that anytime a male voices young girls, it makes me chuckle. Plus he read at a great pace – not too slowly. I would recommend reading SYLO via audiobook format if possible because I believe that Andrew Bates made it a much better and easier reading experience, and I am hoping that he will continue to voice this series. I recommend this audiobook as a first-read-thru as well as for re-reads. AND I will continue to watch for Andrew Bates’ name to appear in audiobooks in the future because I enjoyed his narrating very much.”  -excerpt from the Audiobook Notes in my SYLO review, found HERE

And then sometimes the geeking out does NOT come out quite as professionally as this, but it’s all in the love of books, folks. If I love it, I want you to know. I always want you to know how I feel, be it written in a professional way or with
ALLCAPS and !!!

 ******************************************************

The part I want to talk about today is how loyal I just became to the work of Andrew Bates – pretty quickly – as it relates to me and what exactly that means

(I’m just using Andrew Bates as an example here.
This can and will apply to anyone that I get excited about.)
  • First of all, it means that as a new-to-me reader that I really enjoyed, I will seek out his work. If there is something out there that I would “maybe” consider reading/listening to, finding a voice actor that I enjoy reading it tips the scale for me and I will “definitely” read it/listen to it. SOLD.
  • Second of all, it adds Andrew Bates into a list of voice actors that I will now recommend to others when they ask for audiobook recommendations, depending on who the person is and the type of books they read.
  • Third of all, I will be suggesting to the local school libraries around me AS WELL AS MY PUBLIC LIBRARIES that they obtain copies of this audiobook production because the reading is stellar and as I have observed over the summer at my local public libraries – YOUNG PEOPLE USE AUDIOBOOKS. They love them, you guys! (Sidenote: if you find a great YA/MG title, spread the word to your local librarian or request a copy for your library – young people will listen!)
  • Fourth of all – and perhaps most fun to me – this guy is added to my LIST. You know, the list of the ones I’m loyal to, the list of all lists, the one that I search occasionally when I’m looking for something new. Here’s a snippet of my list:
These are anytime voice actors – meaning if they read, I probably want to hear it:

These are voice actors that I’m now on the lookout for after having positive,
glowing experiences:

These are newer-to-me voice actors that I am so highly impressed with and enjoyed their work so much, I will seek them out. They’ve each managed to take books that I didn’t love and they made them more enjoyable for me. In Sarah Drew’s instance, I finished the series because of her and I want to hear more from her. In Andrew Bates’ instance, I am curious about the next installment of the series he read, but I really only want to proceed with the audiobook and prefer to continue with his series if he voices it.

*Three things about that short list

1. It is not complete nor necessarily in order.
2. While I was on Audible linking to the names above, I grabbed something read by MacLeod Andrews. I shake my head at my inability to show restraint.
3. I am NOT an AMAZON/Audible, Inc. Affiliate. Clicking on these links does absolutely nothing for me except for spread the name of these voice actors to you. I receive no compensation for it!

******************************************************

WHAT/WHO are you guys loyal to?

Authors? Voice Actors?

What/who is instant-read/buy for you?

I’m completely curious because I’m not alone in this –
I just know it.

  1. You are a great supporter! I have my fave authors but I'm not always as good at promoting them as I'd like to be. One of them though is Jeannie Lin who've I given away books-putting my money where my mouth is so to speak. And my post today does mention some of my recommendations. I think that being a better promoter is something I'd like to work on for the end of the year as a personal blog goal.

  2. I definitely have my authors that I'm loyal to. More often than not they're authors whose work I read in high school and LOVED, so they hold this special little place in my heart and I will forever support them. There are also other authors who always write books that touch me on a deeply personal level (Amy Reed, Ellen Hopkins). I will always support them because their work means a great deal to me.

I think it's interesting how you have voice actors that you're loyal to. I don't listen to audiobooks, but I think it's really neat that you've found some favorite voice actors. I honestly never thought people paid that much attention to the person reading the story, but that's just me being naive. Great post Asheley!

  3. I definitely agree that there are some authors that are on my automatic buy list! Mostly because I'm always pretty confident that anything they pull out will be amazing! Some of mine are: Richelle Mead, Cassandra Clare, Rick Riordan, Julie Kagawa, Sarah J Maas- and I'd better stop there because my list is ridiculously long, and yeah, my bank account may or may not hate me haha.

I don't actually listen to audiobooks because I feel my time is better spent actually reading the book (because I'm a relatively quick reader). But it's cool that you have particular voice actors that you like!

    Nice post Asheley 😀

  4. I'm one of those few bloggers who's hesitant to buy books since I worry over disliking them or never re-reading them. And yet, that being said, I DO have my favorite authors who I don't even THINK about buying from – I just do. Melina Marchetta, Maggie Stiefvater, Cath Crowley, Stephanie Perkins, Megan Whalen Turner, Kristin Cashore, etc. just constantly amaze me. I also love discovering a favorite audiobook narrator, though I don't own any audiobooks myself. I always make it a point to check those out from the library, especially if a favorite narrator of mine has read a book I want to check out. It's a completely different but truly wonderful experience. Wonderful post, Asheley!

  5. I honestly have a very small list of authors who are on auto buy. Or more precisely auto-read (I don't have space or money to buy a lot of books). Authors like Maggie Stiefvater and Melina Marchetta are writers that I love to infinity. However, if they threw in a crazy love triangle into their next book…Idk if I'd read it. Though probably I would, because I know that neither of them would make it the central focus of the story, and that the entire world they create would be worth it. Even with beloved authors, I'm very conscious about subjects before I pick up new books, but favorites would always be on my "book watch" list. As in, I'm always paying attention to what they're writing. Unfortunately, I'm a failure with audio books. I haven't read enough of them to have favorites. But I love your loyalties!

  6. I adore this post and that you geek out over authors because I do too. Totally. First up, all I could think about when I started reading this and saw your images was a) I just read and loved Fangirl–even more than Eleanor & Park (and now I MUST READ ATTACHMENTS) and b) I also just read and loved Perfect Ruin and I know you are a little worried that it won't live up to your expectations being such a devoted Chemical Garden Series fan–but Ash–you need to read that when it releases. I think you're going to like it a lot.

My auto read authors are similar to Lauren's: Maggie Stiefvater, Melina Marchetta and also John Green, RAINBOW ROWELL!, Tahereh Mafi, and Gayle Forman. Oh and Trish Doller. Just read her second book and it was amazing, I'll read anything she puts out from now on.

And I think it is SO awesome that you extend your loyal love to audiobook readers! You know it's still a format I have yet to delve into but I just love how you are always so enthusiastic about audiobooks!

  7. I love your reading loyalty! I do have a number of authors that I feel rather loyal to – ones that I want to read anything and everything they've written just because it's THEM even if there have been a few that were a miss for me. I also really love how you have favorite audio readers! I don't think I've listened to enough yet to have a whole list of favorites but there is a reader or two that I really adored and immediately went on Audible to look at what else they narrated!
