Delilah Morrissey has always wanted to be a mother, but when she becomes a young widow, that dream now seems farther away than ever. Unable to continue to live alone in Chicago, her only option is to accept her sister’s offer to move in with her family back in West Virginia. Will Delilah have the faith to pursue a new dream–even if it means giving up the old?

In this charming novella, debut novelist Sarah Loudin Thomas introduces readers to Wise, West Virginia–a small town nestled in an Appalachian valley where the everyday miracles of life and faith play out in stories of healing, hope, and love.

My Thoughts:  I recommended this novella to a friend and used the word “charming” before I even realized that the synopsis describes this story the same way. It is so charming. I started reading this short book on a whim and never stopped until I was finished; I was so fully immersed in this setting, in this time, in the goings-on of everything, everything. I LOVED IT.

Delilah Morrissey is living in a small home with her sister, brother-in-law, and niece after the death of her husband moves her from Chicago to West Virginia. Delilah wants to be helping more around the house, contributing, so she takes a job at the local general store where she reacquaints with Robert Thornton, the store’s owner whom she knew from years ago. Robert has never married but wishes for a family of his own. Delilah also desperately wishes for a family of her own – she never had children with her late husband before he died. The two have a sweet friendship-turned-romance as dictated by the customs of this time.

Appalachian Serenade is a sweet Southern story that sets up the Appalachian Blessings Series nicely. I LOVED the 1945 West Virginia setting, at the end of the World War II era. I absolutely love Robert’s backstory and how it plays into the way things unfold for Delilah, and for Robert and Delilah together.

This novella also introduces us to Perla, who is the major player in the first full-length novel in this series, Miracle in a Dry Season. Perla is Delilah’s niece – they have a special relationship in this short novella; I loved reading it. I recommend this novella to readers that enjoy historical fiction, Appalachian settings, and clean romance. At just over 100 pages, there is plenty of story here to become immersed in this time and setting, and to get a feel for the rest of the series.
