recommendations by others because of how well the
author can turn a phrase OR make me feel with her words.
These are only a couple of examples.

I haven’t read all of the fae books out there yet,
but I’m working on it!

4. SETTING AS CHARACTER.
The Scorpio Races by Maggie Stiefvater
When The Sea is Rising Red by Cat Hellisen
The setting in these books are so good, so sensory –
they’re like their own characters in the book.
You can taste the salty air, feel the mist off of the oceans, etc.
THAT’s what I want. Love it.

Me Before You by Jojo Moyes
I know it may seem weird to put these two together
under one topic, but I’ve had some INCREDIBLE
discussions over email, gchat, text messaging, twitter
whatever over these books!
Y’all, all I want to do is talk about the books!

If You Stay by Courtney Cole
A Song for Julia by Charles Sheehan-Miles
This is basically my go-to genre right now as far as favorites.
I could list a bazillion books in this example but I’ll spare you – for now.
I’m about to do TWO MONTHS of contemporaries on my blog and
I’m slamming them full of New Adult reads because people
have a VERY LARGE misconception of what this genre is all about.
Can’t wait!!

Being Friends With Boys by Terra Elan McVoy
The Silver Linings Playbook by Matthew Quick
It’s possible, friends! And it is wonderful.
Terra Elan McVoy captures it so well in her book,
which just so happens to be one of my favorites. LOVE IT.
There are others too, although the stories often end in romance.

The Song of Achilles by Madeline Miler
American Gods by Neil Gaiman
I love mythology, as lots of you do, but these books need to be more widely read.
Gaiman probably doesn’t need much of an explanation here
but The Song of Achilles is an award-winning, beautiful story written by an
educated, very smart woman that knows her stuff!
Both favorites of mine!
(American Gods is a comfort read and listen for me!)

This doesn’t mean the romance always fails.
It just means that the romance may be very hard to attain
or sustain. But when they finally get together – WOW they’re good!
I am SUCH a sucker for a these stories!
I LOVE THEM. The pain in the beginning and the sometimes-payoff…
Why put myself thru it? I do not know. I do not know.

An interesting list. Faeries are definitley a reason I'll pick up a book too. And New Adult is an interesting topic – I hadn't even thought about it.
I have that "Read it First" too. I want to the story the way it had been intended.
Good point about 'Wait, there's a movie coming out'! – I always read the book before seeing the movie so this is a sure fire way to get me buying a book.
Same here if a movie is coming out, then I'll try to read the books first. BUT I prefer vampires to fairies 🙂

Yeah, I agree with the movie thing too, though sometimes I can't wait to get through the book, and occasionally I'll see a film before I know there's a book. I've been seeing a lot about New Adult genre lately, and not sure what it is really. Will have to look it up.

Oh yes, gotta love those steamy/swoony books! If someone tells me I'm going to swoon over something, I'm immediately drawn to it. I really love verse novels as well! I haven't read many outside of Hopkins's books, but most of what I've read has been very good!

I'll always pick up the book before seeing the movie. While I liked the Silver Linings movie, I was shocked at how much they changed. It's almost unrecognizable. Also agree with mythology and opposite sex friendships. Great list!
Here's my TTT
All of these are ones I love too! Especially Beautiful Language, Slow Burn Swoony and Discussable. But I adore Mythology, New Adult and Setting as Character. I do enjoy fairies and vampires but they aren't auto buys for me. The only one that makes me nervous is doomed/impossible loves. I like starcrossed lovers, but I also am a sucker for HEAs. I know doomed loves can end well, but still I get scared! You talk about Robert Goolrick a lot and I'd really like to try one of his books.
I'm going to say a total HECK YES to mythology. I seriously love it. I will read anything that has even a HINT of mythology in it.
I'm NOT sure how I feel about New Adult yet, but basically everything else on this list speaks to me. I'll take it all, please.
I also love beautiful language, but that's difficult for me to judge before I read a book (I don't always agree with what other people define as beautiful language, but when it is…makes the experience of reading a book so much better!). And oh! Love mythology stories, as well as books that put the setting as a character. I haven't actually read any novels in verse, but I fully plan on correcting that soon. Great list!

I'm so with you on beautiful writing and setting as a character! It also helps that I love the books you've used as examples for those categories 🙂 While I don't typically choose a book based on whether or not it's discussion-worthy, I certainly have a whole new appreciation for bookish discussions after emailing back and forth with you! And you're so right that some books just really make for great discussions/conversations!
