Today kicks of YA Contemporary Month here at my little blog and I couldn’t be more happy, excited, and dance-y to start the month out with
Author John Corey Whaley
.

John Corey Whaley wrote Where Things Come Back, which is the winner of the 2012 Printz Award and the winner of the 2012 William C. Morris YA Debut Award.

Congratulations! Way to go, Corey Whaley!

A while ago, I read and loved Where Things Come Back. So much.
AND
It’s YA Contemporary Month here at Into the Hall of Books.

I figured the best way to celebrate was to throw the two together, right? YES.

So…I grabbed a couple of my blogging buddies and managed to get this fabulous author to sit down and do a fabulous interview. Supplying the questions along with yours truly is the spectacular Ginger from GReads! and our favorite nerd Lisa from Lisa is Busy Nerding.

Here’s the deal:

  • There are three of us asking the questions. We submitted our questions to Corey Whaley ahead of time. These are WAY FUN QUESTIONS with WAY FUN ANSWERS, so you want to check this out.
  • He has no idea which of us asked which question. And really, it doesn’t matter, because they’re all super fun and awesome.
  • There is talk of movies, music, zombies, and hipster culture. A superhero or two may also make an appearance.
  • Video interview time!

THANK YOU so much Corey Whaley!
This is so much fun!
This takes me back to the Awkward Author days.
I miss those…

I love it when authors cast their characters! It helps us to visualize the characters the way John does.

How cool he's good at all these accents:) Nice to know about the places he'd like to visit:)

Thanks so much for the giveaway:)

  2. Super 8 was one of my favorite movies in the last 10 or so years! I can see why you would want Joel Courtney to star in Where Things Come Back (if and when). He was so good in Super 8!

  3. Awww… I love the video interview, Asheley! πŸ™‚ Corey is absolutely adorable *though that's probably not something I should be saying about an award-winning author, right? ^^'*
I love all the answers, especially the one about continuing to travel – I love travelling, too, although after moving from one place to another for the past 10 years, all I want right now is to settle down πŸ˜›

And I love Corey's British accent! WOW, he pulled it off so well! And the French one! πŸ˜€ Color me impressed! Great post and fantastic giveaway! Thank you for sharing this with us!!!

    • Hey Evie! I think Corey is probably okay with being called adorable because he likes attention – he said so himself.

Those accents – cracked me up. Such a great sport for this interview, Evie! He HAD to be on the first day for me. No other choice, hands down, period.

      So happy with this!

  4. I like the retro references. Pee Wee Herman, Bird is the Word, Back to the Beach, Night of the Living Dead. I enjoy hearing about the weird and quirky things that go on in author's heads.

    • Dude, Corey is super duper awesome!

      Best interview ever? YES.
      Best joint interview ever? YES
      Best video interview ever? YES
Best three interviewers ever? OH YES.

Ginger was right, he does do a lot of facial expressions! Ha!

  5. This book doesn't sound like anything I'd be interested in, but Corey is hilarious! His accents are awesome. Great interview! It was adorable! I'll definitely check more into this book to see if I should give it a go.

    Thanks for sharing!

  6. Awwww, I loved Corey doing British accent! And speaking French!! Thanks a lot for this amazing interview, and answering all the questions!

  7. Bwhahaha! This is OFFICIALLY my favorite author interview EVER. Great job ladies and Corey! πŸ˜›

I was laughing out loud at the awkwardness of the accent portion, but THEN I laughed SO loud during the hipster part that I woke up my bf who was sleeping in the next room. (Don't pity him, it's 12:30 pm and he's been in bed for 12 hours).

These were fantastic questions, with fantastic answers. I particularly enjoy Corey's chosen music supergroup, and would be willing to go to some lengths to hear that falsetto.

Thanks so much for this! πŸ˜›

    • YES to all of this!

Have you seen his Awkward Author videos? They're so funny. I miss those so much.

The hipster thing had me rolling. And I love the confidence with that supergroup – it was a good one, yes, but completely different than I would have chosen. Lots of falsetto for sure.

Best interview ever, I totally agree. I couldn't have been happier. I may have clapped my hands and gotten super excited about it.

  8. LOVED this interview! It just makes me want to read WTCB so much more πŸ™‚

I WILL look up that song Corey mentioned later! Eeee, Night of the Living Dead. I haven't seen it but I so can't handle horror movies. And I TOTALLY have a zombie face πŸ˜‰

The Fantastic Five? *dies of laughter* I can totally picture this.

HEY DID SOMEONE SAY PETER PARKER? <3 Ahem.

For the record, I would totally pay to go to this "Justin Bieber" concert.

Thanks for the fantastic interview to all of you! πŸ™‚

    Sonia

  9. Hahaha, great interview, both great questions & great answers and he's so funny!

I like his choices for Cullen, Johnny Simmons is perfect, but his a little bit older, so Joel Courtney would be perfect, too, and yeah, I loved Super 8, too πŸ™‚

My fav parts "Let's talk about movies for an hour, no, ok" hahaha, just like me πŸ˜‰
Picturing that all have zombie faces – hahaha.
His super group choice πŸ™‚ and the super heroes πŸ™‚

    Thanks for the giveaway!!!

  10. Hahaha, this is just AWESOME! And funny too. Great interview questions πŸ™‚

    Accents RULE!

This vlog was so much fun to watch, it's definitely made me more excited to pick up Where Things Come Back.

Thanks for the interview and the gorgeous giveaway! πŸ˜€

    • The accents were great! When the accent-thing was asked, I thought he'd just tell us which ones he was good at. We all really lucked out that he chose to DO THEM and at which ones he did. I die laughing every time I watch it.

The book is so great! I hope you love it so much!

  11. That was so funny, I loved his accent made me laugh so much !

I loved the idea of an video interview it was awesome!

Thanks for the giveaway, Thanks for the chance win.

  12. +JMJ+

I laughed out loud at "Justin Bieber"! LOL!

The idea that Peter Parker is "every teenage boy in every YA book [Whaley] ever read" is intriguing. It's certainly a new angle at which to look at male protagonists in Contemporary YA from now on. =)

    Thanks for the giveaway, Asheley!

  13. HAHA! His accent thing was amazing, and then the whole hipster part. I wish more author interviews were like this!

    Thanks for the giveaway!

    • Oh the hipster thing made me laugh til I had tears running down my face. The British accent did too. Basically I had to stop the video every few seconds.

I agree, if more author interviews were as great as Corey's they'd be so much fun. He was such a great sport about the entire thing. He gets all of the credit!

  14. Woo hoo! What an awesome giveaway, and an epic video interview! I haven't read Where Things Come Back yet, but I've seen it floating around the interwebz a lot lately, and everyone seems to like it. Therefore, I'm entering this giveaway in the hopes that I can win a copy to read for myself! πŸ˜€ Thanks for hosting!

As for the interview, wow. SO funny! This is a guy I would love to meet, haha. I LOVED his British accent, it was fantastic – so much better than I could do! – and the whole made-up-band thing cracked me up. Actually, half the interview had me snickering! That was AWESOME – thanks for the fantastic post, Asheley!

  15. Hahahaha, the accents! omg yes, he definitely succeded. So yeah I'm a total dork because I didn't know anyone from his made-up band except for: you guessed it Justin Bieber! OMG. OMG.

  16. I LOVE the Superhero question!! For serious! Batman is the bomb, and Peter Parker is legit YA Contemp! Seriously. That's awesome. BEST question/answer EVER. πŸ˜€
