I’m so excited that Melissa at i swim for oceans likes discussion posts because sometimes I get chatty and have things to say. Melissa has opened her Let’s Talk event up to the rest of us and I’m excited to be a part of it. Thanks, Melissa!

According to Melissa:

Let’s Talk will feature questions or prompts, which I will answer too. Love it or hate it, weigh in or don’t, it’s my hope that Let’s Talk will at least get you thinking…and maybe even get you discussing with the rest of us!”

This week’s topic
Cliffhangers – love them or hate them…

I’m not gonna lie – I hate cliffhangers.

I think I just get so invested into a book in such a physical way sometimes
– heart pounding, holding my breath, etc. –
that when the book just stops
I CANNOT HANDLE IT.

There have been a few cases that I don’t mind the cliffhanger,
but these have been mostly when I have read a series late
and have the next book beside me and ready to go.

However, even this is rare because I rarely read series books
back-to-back.

I love Cassandra Clare’s Mortal Instruments and Infernal Devices
books so much but I haven’t read
City of Fallen Angels nor Clockwork Prince
yet because I’ve heard they have the worst cliffhanger endings ever.
(And we all know Cassie Clare likes to make us wait…)
(FOREVER…)
(FOR THE NEXT BOOK…)
So I’m not gonna read these until the next books are out.
And if THEY have cliffhangers, I’ll wait again for the NEXT book
and then read them all together.
But I’m weird like that.
(Honestly, I’m fine with the Mortal Instruments series ending after the third book.)
If I’m wrong about either one of these having a cliffhanger ending,
PLEASE CORRECT ME. But I don’t want to read them yet if they do.
I want to read Delirium by Lauren Oliver
and then Pandemonium
but I’ve heard there is a cliffhanger at the end of Pandemonium
SO – is it worth reading the two of them to feel like I’m incomplete?
I honestly don’t know yet.
I don’t know! I don’t know! I don’t know!
Opinions, anyone??
The Chaos Walking Trilogy has been talked about by others in terms of
cliffhanger endings, but I read them all after the entire series was finished
so this wasn’t a problem for me.
The Chaos Walking Trilogy by Patrick Ness
This series is complete so I tell anyone who is like me
– hates cliffhangers –
to go ahead, sink your teeth in, and give it a go.

*****************************************************

Okay friends,
What are some other books
with cliffhanger endings?

I know there are a ton,
but I’m drawing a blank…

Tell me, I want to know!

I hate them. Absolutely hate them. Really, by the time the next book comes out? I've mostly forgotten the huge cliffhanger (or at least the details to them!) I suppose that's one of the downfalls of reading so much. So I find that I have to fit in re-reading the previous book before I can start the new one.

The most recent example? I'm about to finish Spellbound by Rachel Hawkins, and Demonglass had such a huge cliffhanger that I had to go back and re-read.

  2. I am the same way! I will wait on an entire series to be finished if I hear the cliffhangers are bad. Yes, this leaves me out of some pretty big books…But it helps my sanity:)

    • I know…I'm seriously having trouble with the Delirium/Pandemonium books right now. I want to read them SO MUCH but I have heard the cliffhangers are KILLER, which pretty much goes against EVERYTHING I can stand. So my sanity is at stake bigtime right about now. 😉

  3. I have a love hate relationship with cliff hangers.

haha, the cassie clare ones are still sitting on my shelf for this exact reason.

I have read Delirium and Pandemonium though, and the were pretty rough cliff hangers.. but in some instances like those.. I kind of like them.

maybe it's weird, but its makes it even sweeter when I finally get to read the next book. Like all that waiting has a huge pay off.

Though, it's nice to have all of them, so you can just pick up the next. I'm finding it easier to put series's off and do this now that my reading list is filling up like crazy. But then you run the risk of spoilers.

it's just so frustrating.. i'm stressed just thinking about it. Not really, but yeah. 🙂

    • I thought I would feel the big payoff feeling with CoFA, but when it finally came out I just couldn't bring myself to read it! I am just to scared of near collapse or actual collapse at the ending. Same with Clockwork Prince. I just love those series WAY TOO MUCH to hate them because of cliffhangers. I think this makes me the dork of the century.

I'm SO on the fence about Delirium and Pandemonium. I honestly just don't know what to do about them and it is stressing me out (you know, not really, but bookishly) so much. I have Delirium and I am on a wait list for Pandemonium at the library, so I have a teensy bit of time to decide, but I'm seriously stressing. For those, I'll probably end up reading them and having serious breakdown issues.

  4. My relationship errs between love and hate haha 😉 Delirium and Pandemonium were pretty painful cliffhangers, BUT Delirium felt more wrapped up then just baited you for Pandemonium. Pandemonium was a deadly cliffhanger though. JUST DEADLY.

I like some subtlety in cliffhangers, too…think Harry Potter. There was an air of uncertainty, but it didn't feel like it was dangling you off a cliff haha

    Great answer, Asheley!

  5. I am on team I HATE CLIFFHANGERS. Like, I just want to read a book, close it, and know that's the end and I don't have to find out a year or even later to find out what happens. And yes, some of my favorite books have cliffhangers, but still, so annoying.

    • Agreed. The only instances where I have not cared are when the series was completed when I began it. Which seems a bit double-standardish of me.

I'm learning that some people aren't affected by them. Me, I can't dig.

  6. I feel like I'm the only person on the planet who likes cliffhangers! I mean, of course they frustrate me at times, but a cliffhanger is one of the things that really drives me into the next book. I've continued with a few series' just because of cliffhangers. I can't stand not knowing! 😛
That being said, I also have a crappy memory, so if I read a cliffhanger, I usually forget about after the next book or two 😛

    • It will drive me to continue a series if the series is completed. Knowing there is a cliffhanger ahead USUALLY (not always) makes me not read the series until it is completed. Sometimes, this is bad because by the time it is completed I've lost interest.

Right now, I'm on the fence with the Delirium/Pandemonium books.

  7. Cliffhangers can be pretty hit and miss with me. On one hand, I love them because they make me want to hurry up and read the next book. On the other hand, I have a hard time appreciating cliffhangers when the series is still in the process of being released. If I have to wait a year to figure out what happens after the cliffhanger, then the power of the cliffhanger starts to dwindle. Seriously, when the book hits shelves a year later, I totally forget about the cliffhanger!

  8. I love a book with a satisfying ending and cliffhangers ruin that. The worse one that I can think of right now is the Firelight series by Sophie Jordan. As much as I like the books, I recommend that they be read after the third book comes out this year because the cliffies and killers. I guess I can't hate them that much because I keep going back for more 🙂

  9. I'm so glad you told me about this series! Because it has been recommended to me and I want to read it – and I love the covers. But since the third book will be out soon, I think I'll wait. Those doggone cliffhangers just get to me. THANK YOU!!!!

  10. I hate, hate, hate cliffhangers. I especially hate them if I'm reading a new book and I know that the next book in the series is not going to be out for a long time. Last year, one of my favorite reads was Divergent. I still have to wait another month plus until the next book in the series, Insurgent, comes out and I hate it.

    • I remember that you loved Divergent…it won't be long before Insurgent is out. I only recently read Divergent myself – remember? I'll probably wait equally long to read Insurgent…by that time I'll have to read Divergent again. lol! I can't stand cliffhangers either.
